Xiamen University Nanqiang Distinguished Professor and National Distinguished Young Scholar Winner Professor Huang Bangqin Visits SCBE

On May 21, 2023, Professor Huang Bangqin from Xiamen University was invited by SCBE to visit Fengxiang College and delivered a brilliant report titled "Research Progress on Carbon Sequestration and Storage by the Biological Pump in the South China Sea" to faculty and students.

The report focused on the research progress of the marginal sea biological pump, euphotic zone biological pump, and twilight zone (mesopelagic) biological pump, as well as phytoplankton community structure and primary production. Professor Huang Bangqin introduced the problems facing the current research on primary production carbon sequestration in China's seas, including large spatiotemporal variability, scarcity of in-situ measured data, discrepancies in results measured by different methods, difficulty in data assimilation, and unclear key processes and regulatory mechanisms. In addition, he introduced knowledge such as the positive correlation between phytoplankton groups and POC (Particulate Organic Carbon) export flux with diatoms in nearshore and shelf areas, the correlation between saturated photosynthetic carbon fixation rates and the ratio of diatoms to Prochlorococcus in basin areas, and the relationship between maximum light utilization efficiency and phytoplankton size structure and group composition.

Regarding the research on the biological pump in the South China Sea, Professor Huang Bangqin presented current progress and future prospects, noting significant progress in phytoplankton community evolution and regulation. However, in the euphotic layer, the regulatory mechanism of the coupling mode between heterotrophic processes and autotrophic processes on POC export remains unclear. In the twilight zone, the quantitative processes of vertical migration of zooplankton and heterotrophic metabolism of microbes on POC vertical attenuation are unclear, and the impact of plankton mixotrophy on biological pump POC export is not well understood; these problems are precisely the directions that need to be researched in the future.

The report meeting ended with warm applause. After the meeting, Professor Huang Bangqin had a lively exchange with the attendees. Director Gao Shuji and Associate Professor Xu Min of the State Key Laboratory of Marine Resource Utilization in South China Sea participated in the lecture.
