Member of the Academia Europaea, Academician Spiros Agathos Visits the Hainan Provincial Engineering Research Center for Algal Bioactive Substances and Bioproducts at the Invitation of Professor Lu Yandu

On July 24, 2025, Academician Spiros Agathos, a Ph.D. from MIT, Member of the Academia Europaea, and an internationally renowned expert in biochemical engineering, along with Professor Li Jian from Harbin Engineering University, were invited to visit ABB (likely an acronym for the center: Algal Bioactive Substances and Bioproducts) for an academic visit.

Professor Spiros Agathos engaged with faculty and students on the topic of "CO2 Capture and Utilization Based on Marine Algal Bioengineering." The report pointed out that with the intensification of climate change and CO2 hazards, the ocean serves as an important resource for future human development, and the bioengineering potential of marine microalgae is receiving widespread global attention. He also shared the latest achievements in the research and development of novel photobioreactors. Attending faculty and students discussed future research directions in the field of marine bioengineering.

    Academician Spiros Agathos, Ph.D. from MIT, Member of the Academia Europaea, is an internationally renowned expert in the field of biochemical engineering. He currently serves as a member of the EU Science and Technology Committee and has served as chair or member of more than 60 international and national research project review bodies and science and technology policy committees. Throughout his academic career, he has been awarded more than 20 national academic honorary titles and has been invited many times to give keynote speeches at top academic conferences in the international biotechnology field. His main research directions include microalgae biotechnology, marine bioengineering technology, and biochemical engineering.
