On November 30, 2024, Researcher Duan Delin from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), visited the College of Marine Biology and Aquaculture at the invitation of Professor Lu Yandu.

Teacher Duan communicated with the faculty and students in two sessions titled "Analysis of Diatom β-Chitin Metabolic Pathway" and "Genetic and Biochemical Analysis of Alginate Synthesis Pathway," respectively.

Combining years of research experience, Teacher Duan vividly and detailedly explained the team's research progress in recent years on the microalga Phaeodactylum tricornutum and the breeding of the macroalga Laminaria (kelp). During the visit, Researcher Duan Delin had in-depth exchanges with participating faculty and students. As a Chair Professor at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Teacher Duan shared his scientific research insights from over 20 years with the students. He pointed out that it is a fortune for students to be born in a prosperous age; he encouraged students to learn from the older generation of scientists, take "responsibility and country" as their own duty on the long road of scientific research, and be guided by "interest and persistence" and "exploration and pursuit." They should base themselves on their interest in science and be willing to endure the loneliness of pursuing truth; strive to pass on the torch from their predecessors, dare to be the first to assume the historical mission endowed by the country, and work hard for the development of China's science and technology cause. It is understood that Researcher Duan Delin has served as a JSPS Visiting Professor at Tohoku University and Hokkaido University in Japan; and as a Visiting Professor at Stanford University and Harvard University in the USA. He is currently a Council Member of the Chinese Society for Phycology, a member of the Phycological Society of America, a member of the International Phycological Society, a member of the Expert Committee of the China Algae Industry Association, and a member of the Expert Committee of the Processing Waste Branch of the China Aquatic Products Processing and Marketing Alliance. His main basic theoretical research includes seaweed functional genomics, regulation networks of seaweed economic traits, and seaweed genetic diversity; applied research includes seaweed breeding and selection, and development of seaweed functional components. He has presided over National 863 and 973 Projects, National Natural Science Foundation projects, the "Blue Granary" project; Key International Cooperation Projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Marine Science and Technology Demonstration Projects, and CAS Strategic Priority Research Program topics. He has published 190 papers, obtained 31 national patents, and published 6 books. He has won 2 First Prizes for Marine Science and Technology Innovation Achievements from the State Oceanic Administration, 1 First Prize for Science and Technology Progress of Shandong Province, and 1 Second Prize for Science and Technology Progress of Qingdao City.
